Our next project 'Forbidden Music' will explore three rather unknown works by composers of so-called ‘ostracised music’. In June 2025, we will be working with the British violist Connie Pharoah on the String Sextet by Erwin Schulhoff (1928), the String Trio by Gideon Klein (1944) and the Quartet op. 6 by Hans Heller (1928). The latter has a special place in this project as it is the first performance since the 1930s, possibly even the first performance ever. The works of this forgotten Jewish composer, who also created a ‘Requiem for the Unknown Persecuted’, have only been made accessible in recent years by the pianist Jascha Nemtsov and are being transcribed as part of the Lichterfeld Foundation's EchoSpore project.
More information to follow - we look forward to seeing you there!
About the ensemble
Johannes, Coco, Toby, Alex and Joe met at the Hanns Eisler School of Music and were sitting around a table one autumn evening in 2022 when they realised they were the exact combination of instruments to play Schubert's String Quintet - undoubtedly one of the greatest works of chamber music - and so Ensemble Textura was born.
Their first programme in October 2023 - ‘O Dolorosa Sorte’ - combined the quintet with Renaissance madrigals by Gesualdo, Monteverdi and Palestrina in concerts at Galerie Kremers, Kewenig Warehouse and in a lunch concert at the Philharmonie.
Six months later, they presented ‘Memory Eternal’, which was dedicated to music of Eastern Europe and combined folk, classical and music of the Eastern European church, with works by Prokofiev (Ukraine), Arensky and Schnittke (Russia) as well as Bulgarian traditional songs.
And finally, our last project, a tribute to Johannes Brahms, with two of his most important chamber music works and a brand new arrangement of the ‘Geistliches Lied’ by our cellist Alex. His alleged last words (after the nurse handed him a glass of wine) served as our title: ‘Oh, that tastes good!’.
It was also our first programme with two brilliant guest musicians: Miguel Erlich (viola) and Odile Ettelt (clarinet).
We are already developing our next projects, so if you want to stay up to date, follow us on social media or sign up to our newsletter using the form below.
Until next time,
